The Bethesda Foundation Board recently appointed a new executive team with Chris Goertzen from Steinbach, as Chair, Waldo Neustaedter as Vice Chair, and Henry Van de Velde as Secretary.
The 10-member Board of Directors consists of community leaders who are eager to continue making a difference in the healthcare landscape of southeastern Manitoba, says Goertzen.
“The Bethesda Foundation is all about raising funds to ensure we have top-notch healthcare facilities here in Steinbach and the surrounding region.”
The Foundation has seen some big changes in leadership over the past year. For over 25 years, Garth Reimer led the foundation with a strong vision, making major strides in local healthcare. After Reimer passed away, Darrel Penner took over but also sadly passed away last year.
Goertzen noted, “So while we mourn the loss of those two individuals, at the same time, the important work they started must continue, and I’m here to help.”
Goertzen shares why he is passionate about the Bethesda Foundation’s impact on the residents of the southeast. “The foundation is crucial for things like our primary healthcare center, the crisis stabilization unit for mental health, and the hospital expansion. All these improvements are thanks to the foundation’s work.”
Goertzen tells us how they can do that. “We raise funds and work with the community to enhance healthcare facilities. We also lobby to improve services and make sure the standards are as high as possible.”
When it comes to the Bethesda Foundation Board and its goals and priorities, Goertzen says, “We meet regularly to discuss everything from small hospital updates to large projects like the ongoing hospital expansion.” He adds that they want to build on the strong foundation laid by their predecessors.
“We’re continuing the great work that’s been done over the years and striving to improve healthcare in southern Manitoba.”
For newcomers to the southeast, Goertzen notes, “Steinbach is lucky to have the Bethesda Foundation. Many communities don’t have such a dedicated healthcare advocacy group, and it’s a key part of making sure our region remains vibrant and growing.”
Goertzen emphasized that it’s about the big picture. “Our role is to fund and improve healthcare facilities—whether it’s expanding the hospital or ensuring we have the right spaces for care. We work with generous people in the community to make it all happen.”
Recognizing the foundation’s beginnings, Goertzens adds, “We come into these positions on the shoulders of others who worked tirelessly to always bring new healthcare services to our community. And we look forward to continuing that legacy. Our board of directors consists of 10 community leaders, who have a combined 66 years of service on our board, and all are eager to continue this important work.”
