Navigating change together
As a member of the HIS Implementation Committee, Smith has stepped into a consultative role, attending monthly meetings with Niagara Health team members responsible for data management and governance.
“The committee was a perfect match for my skills and interests,” she says. “I understand the monumental tasks involved in system changes and the importance of collaboration. This experience has allowed me to share insights that reflect both a patient’s needs and the operational challenges within healthcare.”
As go-live approaches, patient partners are crucial in providing valuable insights that shape the future of patient care. With their unique perspectives and experiences, they are helping to pave the way for a more connected, efficient and compassionate healthcare experience.
“One of the most exciting aspects of the new HIS is its potential to transform patient experiences,” says Smith. “I’m thrilled that my care team will have timely access to my medical records, including past visits.”
This streamlined access means patients won’t have to repeatedly recount their health histories, reducing stress and enhancing the efficiency of care.
The new system will also empower patients to take control of their health by providing access to their own records.
“It will allow me to share detailed information with other healthcare providers if needed,” Smith explains.
For Niagara Health, the benefits of the new system extend beyond individual patients. “With less manual paperwork, we’ll have more accurate and timely data,” Smith states. “This means healthcare professionals can make better clinical decisions, ultimately improving patient outcomes.”
A vision for the future
While change can be challenging, Smith views it as a necessary evolution for sustainability in healthcare.
“We have the advantage of learning from other hospitals that have successfully implemented similar systems,” she says.
The HIS Implementation Committee’s cross-functional approach ensures that diverse perspectives are considered throughout the process.
“Every member represents a unique viewpoint and that diversity enriches our discussions. This collaborative spirit is essential for addressing the complexities of patient care in a rapidly evolving healthcare landscape.”
Through her experience, Smith has gained a deeper understanding of the complexities involved in healthcare technology.
“Successful system implementations require highly skilled, multi-disciplinary teams that share common goals. Niagara Health has this in place,” she says. “I’m confident that these changes will lead to a more efficient, patient-centered healthcare experience.”
