In fact, to date, $305,000 has been raised and donated to Saugeen Memorial Hospital Foundation to pay for equipment not covered by the province. The funds were raised through 50/50 draws sponsored by Mowbray’s Canadian Tire, and donations from car owners and the public.
A large crowd broke into cheers and claps when Brown announced the fundraising milestone August 8, the third last event of the season under the big flag on the Southampton waterfront.
He was quick to thank the volunteers, car owners, public and the Town for the event’s ongoing success.
“I never thought that 30 years later we’d be having a weekly show and could raise so much money for health care,” Brown said in an interview after the announcement.
Brown said when he came to Saugeen Shores 32 years ago, he kept talking about a car show among fellow enthusiasts – he wanted to show his 1957 Mercury Turnpike Cruiser -until someone finally challenged him to organize an event.
It quickly gained support and turned into a weekly summer show that now features as many as 120 vehicles weekly.
