Hotel-Dieu Grace Healthcare on Tuesday kicked off its 38th annual Tree of Lights campaign to benefit the patient benevolent fund, which provides assistance to patients facing financial challenges.
“The holidays are a time of celebration, but they can also be a difficult and challenging time,” said Bill Marra, president and CEO of HDGH, during a packed tree lighting event at the Prince Road facility.

“We’re here as an extended family to support you. If there’s someone in your life who’s challenged, be there for them.”
Ahead of the moment of illumination, Hotel-Dieu Grace staff approached the decked-out Christmas tree carrying ornaments labelled with the names of departed and ailing loved ones. They hung them following a performance by a young choir from St. Angela Catholic Elementary School.
“Let’s not lose sight of what this is. This is a tree of lights, and how important it is that light shines in the darkness,” said John Fairley, St. Clair College vice-president. His mother, Lois Fairley, co-founded the campaign with Eunice Sinclair in 1986.
“Over and over in this last year, we have heard about struggles, whether it’s mental health struggles, or in life with the economy and COVID and all of the things that we have lived through,” said Fairley. “But the nice thing about it is the light shining.”
For every Tree of Lights donation — $20 or more — the Hotel-Dieu Grace Healthcare Foundation will hang a special ornament in memory or in honour of a loved one on its Christmas tree. Donors will also receive a paper ornament to place on their trees at home.

“This is a wonderful event to embark up the holiday season, and to reflect on the blessings we have, and also, frankly, on some of the challenges — this room is a testament to the fact that we’re not alone,” said Marra.
