Pittsburgh healthcare companies taking precautionary safety measures in wake of UnitedHealthcare shooting

Health insurers and healthcare systems across the country are reportedly cutting down on the information shared about their top execs in the wake of UnitedHealthcare CEO, Brian Thompson’s murder. Pittsburgh’s Action News 4 reached out to the major healthcare systems in Western Pennsyvania to gauge how they’re addressing the safety and security of their leaders. Independence Health System does display its leadership’s photos and bios. When asked for how the company is addressing the security of its employees, a spokesperson declined to comment.Meanwhile, bios and photos of Highmark Health’s leadership team were not currently available on their website. A spokesperson for Highmark Health shared a lengthy statement.“We place the highest priority on the safety and security of our team members at every level, and we are continuously evaluating our processes and learning from experiences across the industry and elsewhere to be as effective as we can be. In that regard, we are closely monitoring the circumstances surrounding the tragic killing of United Healthcare’s CEO,” a Highmark spokesperson said.UPMC did not respond directly to our questions. Despite recent reports that UPMC’s CEO and executives’ photos and bios were at one point scrubbed from its site, UPMC bios remain on their website, without photos.Saul Markowitz, with Markowitz Communications, shared his perspective on how companies should respond.“Just being transparent. They’re going to find out anyway. If you want to find out who the president of a certain company is, you can google it. There’ll be 100 pictures of that person. So, it’s not like you can’t just hide that stuff. I mean, things are coming out right now in the way that to be truthful, if you’re not going to cover somebody for something, then explain to them why it’s that simple,” Markowitz said.
